CHICAGO (AFP) - - British forward Luol Deng signed his new contract with the National Basketball Association's Chicago Bulls, the club announced Thursday.
The move comes one day before Deng joins Britain's national team for the upcoming European Championships and at a minimum of 71 million dollars over six years will make Deng among the top-paid British sportsmen.
"I'm thrilled to be a part of this organization for the long term," Deng said. "Chicago is where I have always wanted to be. I'm looking forward to getting back on the court with my teammates and helping this team get back to the playoffs."
Deng, 23, turned down a five-year deal worth 57.5 million dollars last October and had considered testing the free agent market next year.
"Signing Luol has always been a priority for this organization, and we have always felt that he was a big part of our future," Bulls general manager John Paxson said.
"We are very happy that Luol will now be with us long term as we continue to grow as an organization."
Deng averaged 17.0 points and 6.3 rebounds last season despite a sore left Achilles tendon.
The Bulls were a disappointment last season, finishing 33-49 but landing the top pick in June's NBA Draft.
They selected Chicago native Derrick Rose, a 19-year-old point guard who helped the University of Memphis reach the US college finals.
