SINGAPORE took its first ever Paralympics medal today as Laurentia Tan won the bronze medal in an Equestrian event.
The 29-year-old Tan, who is afflicted with cerebral palsy and deafness, rode on the horse Nothing To Lose and took third place in the Individual Championship Test Grade 1A event. She is also the first Asian Paralympic equestrian medallist.
Based in Surrey, England, Tan finished with a score of 68.8 per cent on her horse, Nothing To Lose, behind Anne Dunham (73.1) and Sophie Christiansen (72.8), who took gold and silver respectively. Both medallists are from Britain.
According to her online profile at the Singapore Sport Council's Sports Idol contest, Tan came in 4th at the World Para-Dressage Championships 2007 in the United Kingdom in the "Freestyle to Music" class.
Tan is one of six local athletes participating in the Games, held primarily in Beijing.
