MADISON, US - ROOKIE Mark Turnesa, who is ranked 358th in the world, fired a four-under par 68 to hold onto the lead after the second round of the PGA Viking Classic on Friday.

The 30-year-old Turnesa has a one-shot lead over a group of four fellow Americans at the US$3.6 million event at the Annandale Golf Club.

Turnesa had a solid opening round to post his first lead since joining the tour this year.

On Friday, he moved to a 11-under 133 total after registering four birdies over a seven-hole stretch.

Turnesa's best finish this year was a 22nd place showing at the Northern Trust Open at the beginning of the season. He has made just 11 of 23 cuts in 2008.

Brian Gay leads a pack of Americans in second place. Gay won the Mayakoba Golf Classic event earlier this year for his only PGA Tour title.

He is joined by Will MacKenzie, who birdied six of the first nine holes en route to a bogey-free eight-under 64.

Also included in the second-place quartet are Dicky Pride and Paul Stankowski, who had nine birdies with two bogeys on Friday.

Chad Campbell, who won here last year, is competing for the United States in the Ryder Cup this week. -- AFP
