Nadal secures No. 1 ranking despite loss

>MADRID, SPAIN -  Rafael Nadal became the first Spanish tennis player to secure the men's year-end No 1 ranking on Saturday, despite losing in the Madrid Masters semi-final.

He was beaten by France's Gilles Simon, who took 31/2 hours to triumph 3-6 7-5 7-6 (8-6).

The Frenchman saved 17 break-points along the way.
