GLASGOW, SCOTLAND- Scotland’s John Higgins thwarted a battling comeback from Welshman Ryan Day to win the British Grand Prix 9-7 here on Sunday.

Higgins had been 5-2 ahead in the best of 17 frame final after the opening session which he then extended to 7-2 before Day, who has never won a ranking tournament, won five of the next six frames to get back to 8-7.

But Higgins held his nerve to secure his fourth Grand Prix title. It was his first trophy since his second World Championship victory in May 2007, and his 19th ranking title in all.

Higgins praised his opponent.

“He’s definitely the player of the tournament and I was so lucky to be 7-2 in front,” said the champion.

“I was just scrambling to get over the line. I was feeding off Ryan’s misses. I was waiting for the decider, so I’m so glad I won.”

Day said: “I’m disappointed with the result but dug in and and gave it my best. John deserved it.”
