LONDON - IPSWICH Town midfielder David Norris was fined 5,000 pounds (S$11,600) by the English FA on Thursday for crossing his hands in a handcuff gesture to celebrate a goal.
The FA said the Championship (second division) player had been charged with improper conduct for the gesture referring to former Plymouth Argyle team mate Luke McCormick, jailed for drink driving after a car crash in which two boys died.
McCormick had been driving back from Norris's wedding when the accident occurred.
'This was an act of immense naivety by Mr Norris who should have considered the possible implications of his actions,' the FA Regulatory Commission said in a statement on the FA website.
The Commission said it had taken into consideration Norris's subsequent actions in writing to the boys' parents and personally meeting them to apologise. The fine will be handed to a charity established by the parents.
Norris, who was also warned regarding his future conduct, had already been fined by Ipswich.
