I REFER to the Foreign Sports Talent Scheme, which seeks to draw overseas athletes to the country in a bid to raise Singapore's profile in the sporting arena.
Singaporeans are still struggling to come to terms with whether this is indeed the way to go towards achieving sporting excellence.
I am an advocate of the scheme, but having witnessed the departure of several athletes after they have accomplished their goals here, I am beginning to doubt if such a "shortcut" really does benefit the country.
Some do not see the point of continuing their careers in Singapore, and until this problem is solved, there will be sceptics out there who see these citizens as being mere mercenaries instead of "one of us".
However, before the issue of acceptance is raised, the question of whether there is anything to keep them rooted in Singapore has to be tackled.
Only after this is resolved should the larger topic of acceptance be broached.
