PM Lee Hsien Loong announced a pilot programme at the kindergarten level to teach 5-6 year olds the basics of table tennis at the Singapore Table Tennis Association (STTA) fund raising dinner on Monday.

The STTA will be collaborating with PAP Community Foundation (PCF) to introduce the programme at at Nee Soon South PCF Kindergarten from Jan to Mar 09.

Singapore won its first Olympic medal in 2008 at the Beijing Olympic Games in 48 years when the women's table tennis team won a silver medal in the team event.

PM Lee also said that although there was an acrimonious disagreement at the STTA afterwards, leading to the resignation of Liu Guodong - the team's coach, it was "time to move forward and put these problems behind us".

He urged STTA to "ensure a healthy pipeline of talent for the future" and in particular to set up the Youth Olympic Games team for 2010.

Money raised at the STTA fund raising dinner would be used to promote youth development and help support national athletes after their competitive playing days are over.
