Olympics: Anti-bid group set for protest as IOC commission arrives

CHICAGO - A taxpayer group protesting Chicago's bid for the 2016 Olympics says it will stage a protest rally and march Thursday as the International Olympic Committee (IOC) evaluation committee arrives for a visit.

The IOC panel will go to all four finalists for the 2016 Summer Games, with Chicago first on the list. Tokyo, Rio de Janeiro and Madrid are also in the running with the full IOC membership set to decide a winning bid on October 2.

Six months before that decision, No Games Chicago will stage a demonstration at Federal Plaza and a march to the bid office, saying taxpayers want improved schools, transportation, housing and hospitals more than the 2016 Olympics.

Critics point to the escalating costs of London's budget for the 2012 Olympics and Vancouver's troubles with Olympic athlete housing that required a major bailout from the city. --AFP
