Everyone wants to beat the world No.1

The New Paper

WHEN you are on top of the world, everyone wants to take you down a peg.

But Spanish striker Fernando Torres believes that Turkey have more motivation to take down the world's top-ranked team than many others.

After Spain squeaked past the Turks 1-0 last Saturday with a goal from defender Gerard Pique, Torres warned his team to beware of a Turkish backlash in the return fixture at the Ali Sami Yen stadium.

With good reason too, as the Turks had given the Spaniards a tough time of it before succumbing in the first game in Madrid.

And with Bosnia-Herzegovina managing a surprise win in Belgium to go provisionally second in the group, Turkey, a point further back in third, now have to make up lost ground.

Humility

'We always confront games with humility but our opponents are making things more and more difficult for us each time because everyone wants to beat the (European) champions,' Torres said.

'If we had to struggle so much to beat Turkey at home, it will be even more complicated on Wednesday. We have already been warned that they are a great team and they will have a lot of desire to beat us.'

Spain will be looking to make it six wins out of six in the Uefa World Cup qualifying zone, and Torres knows how important this win could be.

'But if we can win, we will take a big step towards qualification and we will have the incentive to keep on beating records,' he said.

The Liverpool striker also confessed that he is delighted to see so much quality emerge in the Spanish side lately.

'Previously, we had a few problems and difficulties qualifying for tournaments. We suffered a lot but the national team has been evolving,' he said.

'We have become a great side and we hope that this will last a long time. What we have to do is enjoy ourselves.'
