Inuka the polar bear
Fri, Feb 15, 2008
AsiaOne

Name: Inuka

Species: Polar bear (Ursus maritimus)

Where it's found: Russia, parts of northern Europe, Greenland and throughout most of the Canadian arctic archipelago.

Life expectancy: On average 18 years in captivity, surviving cubs generally live between 20 to 30 years.

Date of birth: Dec 26, 1990

Diet: Cooked rice, meat (like beef, chicken, fish), fruit and vegetables (like apples, carrots, choy sam, watermelon)

Star appeal: Inuka became famous because he was born in Singapore - most likely the first and only polar bear born in the tropics. And Singaporeans have seen him grow over the years to his current age of 17 years old.

Inuka is very responsive during token feedings sessions, diving for food and also standing upright to show the full majesty of his height. He was embroiled in controversy because a polar bear was being kept in tropical Singapore. He is extremely popular with visitors, especially children who come to rub noses with him through the glass of the viewing gallery.
