PUTRAJAYA, MALAYSIA - It is not fair to accuse police and rescue service personnel of stealing from Bukit Antarabangsa landslide victims without giving details, Home Minister Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar said.
Police and rescue personnel, he added, had worked hard to control crime and the crowds while assisting victims of the Dec 6 landslide.
"They had to coordinate activities in a situation where there was a danger of landslide and with many people around. Give credit where it is due," he said yesterday.
He was commenting on police reports lodged by Bukit Antarabangsa residents, alleging that their homes had been broken into by police personnel.
K. Thanarajah, whose wife Dr N. Yogeswari died in the tragedy, had sent pictures to a newspaper claiming that rescuers had scoured a damaged bungalow after search and rescue operations were halted for the day.
Syed Hamid said the culprits could have been non-police personnel as there were many people at the site then.
Meanwhile, police have urged Thanarajah to lodge a report over the pictures.
Selangor police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Khalid Abu Bakar said the published pictures did not prove anything. He said police had already initiated investigations into the claims.
