SUBSCRIBERS to high-definition cable television here, currently starved of such channels, will soon get another one - for free.
Mediacorp's HD Channel 5 service will be available to StarHub's high-definition TV subscribers from next month under a deal signed by both parties recently.
The move will allow StarHub's HD customers to watch popular programmes such as Lost, movies like The Lord of The Rings, and special events including the Beijing Olympics in crisp, clear detail.
Currently, they only have three channels in HD: National Geographic, Discovery and HD Showcase.
The agreement, several months in the making, might prompt TV buffs to finally migrate to high-definition.
For over a year now, HD television sets have been all the rage among consumers as prices edged ever southward.
But while many buy the sets, few subscribe to HDTV. The reason: Little content, and the need for separate set-top boxes.
