AIG pelted with virtual tomatoes at MoveOn.org

SAN FRANCISCO (AFP) - - Internet users are pelting AIG with virtual tomatoes in a MoveOn.org campaign to express outrage over huge bonuses awarded to executives at the bailed-out financial giant.

MoveOn's stated mission is to splatter an image of an entrance to American International Group offices with 6.4 million cyber tomatoes to symbolize the number of dollars one executive received as a bonus at the failing firm.

Tomato hurlers target portions of an AIG entrance photo with a curser and then fire with computer mouse clicks.

Visitors to the website are also prompted to sign an online petition demanding that Congress retrieve the more than 200 million dollars in bonuses given to AIG executives while US tax money was being pumped into the company.

The petition reads:

"Under no circumstances should the AIG executives who helped create the financial crisis receive bonuses. That's our money and you should do whatever it takes to get it back."

Top US senators expressed disquiet Sunday over a populist bill aimed at taxing nearly all of AIG-style bonuses, querying whether it was constitutional and if it might delay economic recovery.

The bill moves this week to the Senate after passing overwhelmingly through the House of Representatives on Thursday. Senators on both sides are looking at diluting its punitive levy of 90 percent.

"Let Congress know what we think of AIG's bonuses and that we expect them to do whatever it takes to get the money back," MoveOn urges at its website.
