Two Taiwanese men and four Thai men have been arrested for allegedly disguising as police and kidnapping a Taiwanese textile businessman and members of his family to get a ransom of Bt30 million (S$1.26 million).
Police arrested the suspects along with a computer desktop, two computer notebooks, a DVD player, Bt10,000 in cash, four bags of luggage and 10 cell-phones, Central Investigation Bureau chief Thangai Prasajaksatru told a press conference yesterday.
Police also rescued the businessman's mother and two of his children from a home in Bangkok's Suan Luang district and then rescued the business-man from another house in Muang district in Samut Prakan.
On December 4, the businessman's father filed a police complaint that Teng Li Wei, 35, his wife Hsu Yu Fen, 36, Teng's mother Yuan I-ing, 58, and two children aged nine and seven were kidnapped on November 24 on their first visit to Thailand.
On Sunday, undercover police nabbed one suspect who collected Bt900,000 wired by a relative in Taiwan upon the businessman's request at a money-transfer service shop in Big C Mall in Lat Phrao.
Carrying a search warrant, police rescued the businessman's mother and children. Police later rescued the businessman and another Taiwanese man also detained there, but the man has said nothing to Thai officials.
The gang told police they ordered Hsu Yu Fen to travel to Singapore, where the family owned a business, to withdraw money for a ransom.
The suspects reportedly disguised as police to apprehend the family at Suvarnabhumi Airport on November 24. It is suspected the gang followed the victims prior to the trip and had more accomplices.
The businessman, who was tearfully reunited with his mother and children yesterday, said he was tied up and tortured with electric shocks during the 15-day being held hostage.

Tortured for 15 days before rescue
Lianhe Wanbao reported that Mr Teng was tied to a bed for the duration of his captivity, and was not even allowed to use the bathroom.
He was also electrocuted, and had water poured up his nose when he refused to co-operate with the kidnappers.
The kidnappers were also very careful. Not only was the family separated and held at two different places, Mr Teng was blindfolded and moved to three different places.
But despite their care, an undercover police officer nabbed one of the kidnappers when he was picking up the ransom of Bt900,000. The suspect revealed the location of the kidnappers' lair.
On Dec 13 night, the Thai police launched an operation to rescue the family, surrounding a residence in the Suan Luang district.
Mr Teng's 58-year-old mother Yuan I-ing, his son, nine and daughter, seven, were rescued at about 4am.
Six hours later, they rescued Mr Teng from a house in Samut Prakan, an area near the Chao Praya River.
The kidnappers had already sent Mrs Teng back to Singapore with one of their accomplices to withdraw money from the family's bank accounts when they were rescued.
Thai police informed Singapore forces, who arrested the accomplice and rescued Mrs Teng in Singapore.
The family had an emotional reunion, and were sent to the hospital for check ups immediately.
