CHINA - China, a very conservative country where pornographic materials are strictly prohibited, has become the world's biggest sex toy producer.
About 70 per cent of the sex toys in the world are made in this country.
"Half of our customers are from the United States and 30 per cent from Europe," said Romeo Jiang, a sex toy manufacturer whose turnover was between US$2mil (RM6.38mil) and US$3mil (RM9.57mil) last year.
Jiang's factory produces different types of sex toys including vibrators, dildos and fetish clothes.
The sex toy industry in China, with more than 1,000 manufacturers, has been worth about US$2bil (RM6.38bil) a year for the past few years.
A report released by China Market Research Centre said in the first five months of this year, revenue has reached US$940mil (RM2.998bil).
And the best-selling item: products to enhance sexual arousal such as stimulus condoms, which account for 21.5 percent of the market, the report said.
Ma Xiaonian, deputy director of China Sexology Association, said that in terms of sexual culture, China has also come a long way, since the mainland's first sex shop opened its doors in Beijing in 1993.
Sex toys as an aid are very helpful to single-parent families, married couples and singles to live a healthy way, he said.
