Police officer killed in Papua

An officer from Jayapura Police office, identified as Second Brig. Ridwan Napitupulu, was found dead next to a river on Thursday after he was allegedly slain by a group wielding arrows and daggers, a top official says.

National Police spokesman Insp. Gen. Saud Usman Nasution said Ridwan was killed when he and another officer, Chief. Brig. Dian Budi Santosa from Nimbrokang Police office, were en route to a nearby village to offer assistance following security disturbances in that area, as reported by kompas.com.

He added that the officers were met by group, which had suddenly attacked them. The officers fled to the river for safety. Dian was able to escape but Ridwan was killed during the episode.

Ridwan's remains were discovered by a local soldier patrolling the area.

Rumors of unrest circulated ahead of events scheduled for today, which many have dubbed as the 50th anniversary of the independence of West Papua.

The Free Papua Movement (OPM) has played down rumors of unrest saying that violence would only occur as a result of manipulation by certain parties.
