TAIPEI - Hsinchu County Magistrate Chiu Ching-chun and singers Selina, Hebe and Ella of the megapopular singing group S.H.E yesterday unveiled the theme song for the upcoming Hsinchu Lantern Festival.
The big names also welcomed local residents and overseas travelers to take part in the 1,000 or so events, that will features more than 100 performance groups, from Feb 24 to March 10.
The presentation ceremony was also attended by Director General David W.J. Hsieh of the Tourism Bureau and other senior government officials.
Chiu said the activities will be held mainly at Hsinchu City's high-speed rail station area starting Sunday, Feb 24, the traditional date of the Lantern Festival.
There will be five major themes and 28 lantern display districts with themes such as humanities, science and technology, and animation to highlight the arrival of the Year of the Snake, also known as the "Year of Little Dragon," on Feb. 10 on the Chinese lunar calendar.
Groups from 13 cities and townships in Hsinchu County will present artistic performances, unique local products and souvenirs as well as cultural and agricultural products.
Overseas groups from mainland China, Japan, Indonesia, Vietnam, the United States, Brazil, France, Russia and Africa will join the celebrations.
The Hsinchu County Government has mapped out 16 travel routes to help tourists enjoy the region's scenery, special local and Hakka cuisines, and lantern shows that tell local folk stories as well as exhibit sophisticated robots with artificial intelligence.
The high-tech lanterns, which are supported by companies like Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. and Delta Electronic, will highlight the most advanced, low carbon emission technologies.
Chiu and Hsieh suggested visitors take advantage of the rich array of programs by staying longer in Hsinchu to gain further understanding of the area's tourism and cultural attractions.
