Singapore's para-equestrian athletes win big at German Championships

Para-equestrian athletes Laurentia Tan Yen-Yi and Maximillian Tan Chern took home top prizes at the German Para-Equestrian Dressage Championships.

They placed first and second in the Freestyle to Music finals for Grade 1A and 1B respectively at the competition that was held in Uberhern, Germany, from June 8 to 10.

Despite facing strong contenders from Germany on the final day of competition, they still managed to achieve a stellar performance.

Laurentia had also clinched 2nd placings in the Team and Individual Tests during the first two days of the competition.

The team, comprising two-time Paralympic bronze medalist Laurentia and Paralympic debutantes Max and Gemma Foo, are preparing for their next big challenge - the London 2012 Paralympics Games.

They would be the first Asian Para-Equestrian team to participate in the Paralympic Games to be held from Aug 29 to Sept 9 this year.

The team is now the top team in Asia and is ranked 11th in the world.

All three riders have cerebral palsy and began riding as therapy at Riding for the Disabled (RDA). Laurentia is also hearing-impaired.
