Values to be main focus of Malay Language Month

This year's Bulan Bahasa (Malay Language Month) was launched by Dr Yaacob Ibrahim

SINGAPORE - This year's Bulan Bahasa (Malay Language Month) will focus on bridging gaps by allowing simple, heart-warming communications in line with traditional values.

Launched today at The Plaza, National Library Building by guest of honour Dr Yaacob Ibrahim, Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts, it is themed "Kukuhnya Nilah, Eloklah Budi".

Chairman of Bulan Bahasa, Mr Zaqy Mohamad said the campaign reflects how the Malay community is associated with certain values such as graciousness and respect.

"The Malay language has always had a special place in the community. It is our identity, and yet, it also represents more - our heritage, our culture and even our values," he said.

This year's campaign will feature more mainstream events, including a social media campaign, to make Bulan Bahasa more accessible to a more diverse audience.

Language Ambassador Mr Imran Ajmain, a popular Malays singer and an avid social media user, will be using Twitter to spread the message of Bulan Bahasa 2012 to a young and savvy audience.

He will record four melodies that will be uploaded to his Twitter account for the public to compose lyrics to.

At the end of the campaign, he will personally put together a final song contributed by the Malay community.

Other activities include story-telling contests and motivational talks organised by community groups like the Malay Activity Executive Commitees and schools.

Partners will also create programmes and activities on July 1, 7 and 14 at the National Library, the Esplanade and Jurong Regional Library.

There will be literary arts-based activities at the Esplanade and open-mike sessions at Jurong Regional Library, where members of the public can express themselves through song and reciting poetry in Malay.

These events and activities are open to all members of the public. Details can be found on the Bulan Bahasa website at https://mbms.sg.
