DPM Teo's mother dies at age 89

SINGAPORE - The mother of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Home Affairs Teo Chee Hean died yesterday morning.

Madam Tan Suang was 89.

The news came in an e-mail statement from Mr Teo’s press secretary. Madam Tan’s wake and funeral will be kept a private affair.

Madam Tan's husband, Mr Teo Cheng Guan, died in 2002 at the age of 81. He was the former chairman and chief executive of OCBC Bank.

In a 1996 interview with The New Paper, Mr Teo had said of his father: "We were always taught to work hard and not to expect things to come our way in life."

Mr Teo, who is also Coordinating Minister for National Security, has three sisters - Hee Lian, Chai Lian and Swee Lian.

Chinese evening newspaper Lianhe Wanbao yesterday reported that he had attended a National Day Observance Ceremony held at Elias Park Primary School two days ago, and there were no hints that his mother was ill.
