SINGAPORE: The relationship between Singapore and Britain has grown stronger over the years, said President Tony Tan at a state banquet Istana today.

He was hosting Britain's Prince William and his wife Catherine at his residency this evening. The royal couple arrived in Singapore today for the first leg of their Asian tour as part of Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee.

Mr Tan said the United Kingdom is Singapore's fourth largest European trading partner and there are currently more than 3,000 British companies here.

He added that the 30,000-strong British community in Singapore also has a strong and vibrant presence.

The two countries also share close educational links, with more than 4,000 Singaporeans each year pursuing degrees from British universities, said Mr Tan.
