Michael Palmer has resigned from the People's Action Party and MP for Punggol East over an improper relationship with a staff member of the People's Association (PA).

At a press conference today, Mr Palmer said he had committed a "grave mistake". He said: "I am deeply sorry, and apologise unreservedly to constituents and family."

Mr Palmer said he had a relationship with a member of the PA staff working in Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC. The member of staff has also resigned.

Mr Charles Chong will be the Acting Speaker of Parliament while DPM Teo Chee Hean has appointed Mr Teo Ser Luck to oversee Punggol East.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said on his Facebook page: "It was with great sadness that I accepted Speaker Michael Palmer’s resignation today. He has worked hard as an MP and been a good Speaker. But all MPs and Grassroots Advisors must uphold high standards of propriety and personal conduct, especially when dealing with constituents, activists, and staff."
