What: If traditional nian gao is too sweet for your liking, try the ginger nian gao from Kee Wah Bakery. Made in Hong Kong, the ginger cuts through the sweetness and it is best eaten coated in egg and lightly pan-fried. It also comes in coconut and almond flavours.

What: Quite possibly the yummiest Chinese New Year treat this year, Patisserie G's moist madeleines are glazed with freeze- dried pineapple. The sugary crust adds a sweet crunch to the tart pineapple flavour and buttery madeleine.
If you want a denser cake, try its orange and chocolate butter cake, which has orange peel soaked in Cointreau and dark chocolate chips. It is glazed with candied orange peel.

What: The traditional sweet pineapple tart gets spiced up with a hint of cracked Sichuan peppercorns. Another new offering from bakery chain Bakerzin is its pineapple paste with egg yolk good luck pastry (right). Reminiscent of a mooncake, the flaky pastry combines pineapple filling with a layer of salted egg yolk paste.
