Rush to retrofit Tiong Bahru flats irks residents
Mon, Dec 31, 2007
The New Paper

I WRITE about the blocks of HDB flats at Boon Tiong Road in Tiong Bahru, now being retrofitted before they are rented out. I understand that Katong Hostel is leasing them.

Building works, which began early this month, have been going on every day, including weekends and public holidays, even on Christmas Day. Work starts from around 7am and ends around 9pm each day.

I understand that for work activities at night, they are confined to activities indoors that do not make too much noise, but I have heard drilling at night too, as I live nearby.

For weekends, we prefer to sleep in till late morning but are woken up by the noise.

There are also other residents or children who like to sleep early at night or have a good rest on weekends, but are unable to do so.

Apart from the noise, there is also the inconsiderate parking of the contractors' vehicles along Boon Tiong Road, making one out of the two lanes of the road unusable.

There are no road signs to indicate if one lane is closed when motorists turn in from Tiong Bahru Road.

As Tiong Bahru Road and Boon Tiong Road are dimly lit at night, the absence of road signs and illuminating hazard lights makes it very dangerous for motorists.

Materials for the site are also delivered and unloaded onto the pathway along Boon Tiong Road, making it inaccessible to pedestrians.

Katong Hostel may be rushing to finish the work, but it should still take into consideration the residents living in the area and minimise their inconvenience.

What are the regulations concerning construction work in a residential area and the parking of construction vehicles?

I hope the relevant authorities will step in to control the situation.
