Has transport council outlived usefulness?
Tue, Jan 22, 2008
my paper

ACCORDING to the latest public transport review, there will be more bus operators and the planning of bus routes will be taken over by the Government.

Does it mean that the agencies which are currently overseeing our public transport system have not been managing it effectively?

Will the proposed moves solve the problem of bus bunching and infrequency, MRT overcrowding, as well as giving competitive fares?

I doubt.

Our taxi fares is one example.

Do we see competitive fares after the deregulation which resulted in more operators?

No, all of them take the lead from 'big brother' Comfort.

No operator would even consider sticking to the old fares or reducing taxi rentals.

We have two bus operators but do we see different fare structures?

I think the Land Transport Authority and the Public Transport Council should take commuter feedback seriously, and enforce penalty on the operators when necessary.

Since the Government is taking over the route planning and other things related to our public transport, it is, perhaps, time for PTC to be dissolved as its role will no longer be required.
