I REFER to the report on Jan 29 on two students caught trying to take upskirt photos of their teacher.
When I was a student, public caning was a very serious punishment and we were all fearful of it.
It was also embarrassing as the whole school would witness the caning.
But in this day and age, would public canning help students learn their lesson?
Some may agree that caning would make the students learn the hard way, but my question is, would our younger generation buy this argument?
I suggest that these students go for counselling as well as undertake volunteer work, as these would not cause them embarrassment.
My concern is that if the students are embarrassed publicly, they may feel resentful and retaliate by being more disrepectful towards their teachers.
Some may even not want to go to classes as a result.
I believe that volunteer work would help the students learn about respect for others.
Their parents should also acknowledge their child's wrongdoing and be encouraged to sit in during the counselling sessions.
In addition, schools should also advise their teachers not to wear skirts or any clothing that is too revealing.
The use of mobile phones should also be banned during lessons.
Teachers may also instruct the students to keep their valuables in their bags, which they can then leave at the back of the classroom.
In this way, the students will not have the chance to be distracted by their belongings and misbehave as a result.
