The New Paper

I REFER to Seyadoudjarina Begame's letter, "Put up flashing signs so drivers will prepare to stop for pedestrians, (The New Paper, 12 Jan).

Advance warning lights together with a "Prepare to stop" sign were installed at the exit of the Fort Canning Tunnel on 16 Jan to alert motorists of impending change in the traffic signals at the pedestrian crossing.

Motorists are advised to travel within the speed limit of the road and adhere to traffic signals in order to react to the change in traffic light signals at the pedestrian crossing.

The current traffic light signals at the pedestrian crossing on Penang Road will turn green before those at the junction of Penang Road and Penang Lane.

So there is no concern that motorists will see a green light there when the pedestrian crossing is red.

Please be assured that we will continue to fine-tune the traffic light timing to minimise confusion for motorists and look into other road engineering measures to improve safety for pedestrians.

We thank Seyadoudjarina Begame for the feedback.
