PLEASE refer to the letter "Loophole in demerit point system for motorists?" (TNP, 12 Feb) by Guo Shengnan Oliver.
Mr Guo suggested having drivers register when they own a car and drive regularly (to distinguish experienced drivers from those new on the road).
I obtained my driving licence in 1987 and have been driving since then. But I do not own a car.
I used to drive my father's car before I got married and now I am driving a car that is under my husband's name.
I believe there are many people out there like me, driving every day but without a car under their own name.
Therefore, should people like me be consider "new" or "old" drivers?
I feel Mr Guo's suggestion is not feasible. The reason why the traffic police have two separate points systems is to encourage new drivers to be very careful on the road and these new drivers tend to be in their 20s. From recent reports of accidents, I understand that most victims tend to be in their early 20s.
Let us focus on how to be careful and cautious when we drive on the road and we should not even be thinking of how many demerit points we can accumulate.
If everyone plays their part in road safety, there will be no need for a demerit points system in the first place.
