I ATTENDED the Singapore Airshow, both as a trade visitor and as a public visitor with my friends, one of whom came from Taiwan.
While the show itself was enjoyable, the transport system for visitors left much to be desired.
Firstly, it was stated on the tickets that a shuttle service was available from Pasir Ris MRT Station.
However, it did not state that there was a separate shuttle service from the Expo MRT Station.
On the airshow's website, it was stated that there was a service from the Expo MRT Station but no immediate mention of one at the Pasir Ris station.
In the end, we drove to and parked at the Singapore Expo on Sunday. The shuttle bus queue was not long and we got to the airshow without any trouble.
However, the same cannot be said for the return leg.
When the aerial display ended at 2pm, there was a huge rush of spectators trying to leave. The queue line snaked for at least 400m, of which only half of the people had shelter from the hot sun.
There were separate queues to major hotels in the Marina Bay area that were much shorter, so my friends took the coach to Marina Mandarin, while I queued for the bus returning to the Singapore Expo to get my vehicle.
At the shuttle bus queue, I was surprised to see that people going to Pasir Ris MRT Station and Expo MRT Station had to join one common queue, which split only at the end for either stations.
Most of the people were going to Pasir Ris.
At the end of the Pasir Ris queue, only one bus was open for boarding, while at least eight other buses waited behind.
The queue was so long that it extended to a corridor in the main building. The corridor was filled with large rubbish bins full of rotting food.
And many people were being pushed against the dirty bins.
The corridor was also a parking space for VIP buggies, and people in the queue, including the elderly and those with young children, had to climb over many buggies as they progressed down the line.
At 3.30pm, there was a slight drizzle and those in the unsheltered half of the line started pushing.
I reached the split in the queue 11/2 hours later and found I was one of only five people taking the Expo bus.
I would like to suggest that the airshow's organising committee relook the arrival and departure procedures for visitors.
Give clear and concise information on all shuttle bus routes on all forms of media.
Let passengers board multiple buses at the same time, and have separate queues for buses going to different destinations.
Queues should not extend into dumping and buggy parking areas.
Being an aviation fan, I felt truly saddened to hear many visitors in the queue proclaiming loudly and angrily:
"We'll never go to the airshow again".
