Poor traffic and crowd control at airshow

The New Paper

I REFER to the letter, "I missed the display because of long shuttle bus queue" (The New Paper, 25 Feb).

It was not just the shuttle bus that was a problem. Traffic, in general, was handled poorly.

Firstly, when we bought the airshow tickets at Bukit Batok Civil Service Club, we were not informed about the option to buy car decals for parking.

This resulted in us being turned away by the police when we reached the event location at 10.45am.

The police mentioned that we could buy the car decal at Changi Ferry Terminal, but upon arriving there at 11.15am, the guard said that the decals were sold out.

There were no parking lots at the Changi Ferry Terminal or White Sands mall at Pasir Ris.

We managed to find lots in the Pasir Ris neighbourhood multi-storey carparks.

As the queue for both the shuttle bus and taxis were too long, we decided to call a cab.

However, the traffic was too heavy and it took us an hour to reach the event venue from Pasir Ris Drive 3.

My sons caught the aerial display from the cab while it was travelling along Changi Beach.

On reaching the venue at 1.48pm, we had to queue again to enter the place.

The lack of crowd control was very unpleasant as people were cutting queue.

What was to be a pleasant family trip turned out to be a nightmare.

Here are some areas that can be improved:

1. Have more than just two days for the public to solve the overwhelming human traffic problem.

2. Inform visitors about the compulsory carpark decal in posters, website and during the purchase of tickets.

3. Have more communication between those guarding the carpark and staff members selling the carpark decals. We should not have been directed to the ferry terminal when there were no more decals.

4. Sell only as many tickets as the venue and event logistics can accommodate.

The Singapore Airshow is just Asia's largest aerospace and defence event. I dread to think how prepared we are to handle international events such as the Formula One night race.
