The New Paper

I READ with regret the report, "She's flung 15m" (The New Paper, 5 Mar), about the horrific crash in Siglap.

My sympathies to the family of the dead victim and I wish the injured victim a speedy recovery.

As a resident of the area, I am alarmed at the way some motorists drive, with little regard for the safety of others.

Especially disturbing is the pedestrian crossing along Upper East Coast Road just before Chai Chee Secondary School.

Several times, I have seen motorists not bothering to stop even when the light has turned red and pedestrians have started to cross the road.

I believe it could be due to "signal light fatigue" since there are many traffic lights along the stretch of East Coast and Upper East Coast roads.

But this is no excuse for motorists not to be on their guard and to ignore the lights.

This crossing is also used by students of the school.

Being the father of two school-going kids, I constantly worry for their safety.

I keep reminding them to wait until drivers have stopped their cars before crossing the road even if the green man has lighted up.

One cannot emphasise enough the need for safer roads, not only for motorists, but also for the pedestrians who use them.
