I ATTENDED a Formula One talk conducted by Singapore Pools last Saturday where the speaker was introduced by the emcee as an expert on F1 races as well as a teacher at a secondary school here.
It is a known fact that Singapore Pools is the only legalised betting agent in Singapore and that the purpose of the talk was to inform potential F1 bettors of track information.
The question is: Should the speaker, a teacher, be speaking on the topic?
I believe teachers should commit themselves wholeheartedly to education, bearing in mind that they are entrusted with the important task of educating our future generations.
I am not saying that teachers have no right to pursue their interests and their hobbies, but I believe a line should be drawn with regard to the extent of their pursuit as well as the areas of interest.
In addition, the speaker was introduced as an F1 expert at the event, just because he is an avid F1 fan for 10 years and he has contributed articles on the topic in the local media.
With all due respect to him, I cannot help but wonder about his expertise, as defined by Singapore Pools.
