THE overhaul of our transport system, unveiled in January, is good and comprehensive. However, I wish to highlight the traffic woes in the estate of Tiong Bahru.
For a start, some bus stops along Tiong Bahru Road - mostly a two-lane road - are without bus bays. Whenever a bus pulls up at these bus stops, it holds up traffic behind it.
This is especially so at the bus stop outside Tiong Bahru Plaza, where the bus stop is located after a traffic junction.
During the evening rush hours, there will be a queue of buses waiting to stop at the bus stop outside the shopping mall, taking up one lane of the road.
At the same time, there will be another line of vehicles waiting in the remaining lane to make a right turn into Jalan Membina. This leaves other vehicles that want to go straight having no space to move.
There's also another queue - vehicles waiting to enter Bukit Ho Swee Link from both directions of Tiong Bahru Road.
Most of them are heading to Tiong Bahru Plaza and Central Plaza. A review of the access to the two buildings would help alleviate the congestion.
Some parts of Tiong Bahru Road are quite narrow, and buses or heavy vehicles waiting to make a right turn would hold up the traffic and cause a jam.
At the bus stop opposite Tiong Bahru Plaza, the problem is of a different kind - bus commuters who are unable to board services 123 and 195 because of over-crowdedness.
I recall that when I moved into the estate three years ago, there were plans to widen Tiong Bahru Road. Until now, nothing has been done.
There will be heavier usage of Tiong Bahru Road, as the area undergoes a renewal with several new condominiums and a new housing estate being developed. The current layout of Tiong Bahru Road will not be able to cope with that.
I hope the various agencies can work together to review the road system in Tiong Bahru to make it more efficient.
