I WRITE regarding the concerns expressed about having foreigners in our midst. Not only do Singaporeans fear that their jobs might be taken away, but there is also the issue of social integration.
Many migrants do not integrate well into Singapore society, and that makes it harder for citizens to accept them. Singapore needs migrants, and the earlier we learn to adapt to and embrace the policy of welcoming migrants, the easier it will be for our country to move on.
The Government could also be more conscious of how it brings in foreign workers and manage the delicate task of integrating them into our society. Foreign workers not only bring with them their skills, but also their culture and customs.
In my former workplace, I had the opportunity to befriend an Indian physiotherapist who was on a renewable two-year work permit. However, he would have preferred to work in the United States. My guess is that the perks and lower stress level there might have been factors influencing his opinion.
Singapore might have been a mere stepping stone for the likes of my former colleague. We should bear in mind that most migrants are drawn here by our strong economy and safe environment. When these no longer exist, many will not hesitate to flock elsewhere.
