THE article, "Captain MG and his S'pore gang" (mypaper, Sept 9), made me feel heartened that there are companies like Go-Around that help older workers get employed. I strongly believe that older people constitute a valuable resource which is currently largely untapped and unrecognised.
We are healthier and are living longer, and can still contribute to the economy when we are in our 50s, 60s or even 70s. It is sad that some employers are still reluctant to employ senior citizens because they think that they are slow and will demand a higher salary because of their years of experience.
Others think older workers will fall sick often, and become a liability to employers. Such fears can be allayed by a mutual agreement between the employer and employee. Most importantly, both parties should be comfortable and strive for a win-win situation.
Giving job opportunities to older people will enrich their lives and allow them to be financially independent. It could also lighten the burden of adult children who need to support elderly parents. Older workers can be an asset to any organisation.
