Unfair to say that MPs do not speak up
Fri, Sep 12, 2008
my paper

I REFER to the letter, "MPs should speak up more" (my paper, Sept 9), by Mr Gilbert Goh Keow Wah, in which he said that most nominated MPs (NMPs) speak up passionately and against the grain.

One obvious reason why NMPs can speak up freely without any constraints is that they are non-partisan and they are also not accountable to voters.

With the above in mind, contrary to what was said in the letter, I think that our MPs are also outspoken and have articulated their opinions on a wide range of issues, including politics, economics and society.

Some even take pains to express their views on issues and matters that are important to common people.

One such person is the MP for Jurong GRC, Madam Halimah Yacob.

The perception that NMPs have performed their role well in Parliament and have even overshadowed MPs is not only unfair to the latter group, but also groundless.
