THE amount of litter is increasing in estates, at shopping centres and on streets.

Even the parks are not spared.

In my block, I find rubbish in the corridor, more at the foot of the block, and also in the park just before the junction of Avenues 3 and 5 in Woodlands.

There was also paper and tissue on the floor of the train I take every morning.

If nothing is done to improve this state of affairs,

I have not read about or seen litterbugs undergoing Corrective Work Order for a long
time.

Has the scheme been abandoned?

I understand that the authorities are being stretched to the limit, and catching litterbugs may not be a high priority.

Therefore, I suggest that this role be delegated to volunteers, who could be trained and authorised to issue summonses to litterbugs.

I appeal to everyone to play their part.

Parents should educate and guide their children, and teachers should stress to students the importance of keeping the environment clean.

Town councils and shopping-centre managers could step up their supervision of cleaners, and the Government could increase enforcement of the anti-littering law and bring offenders to task.

Together, we should be able make Singapore clean and green, and a pleasant place to live in.
