Time for Case to monitor food prices

CHEAPER food prices due to falling global commodity prices would be welcome news.

However, this is not going to be the case if manufacturers, retailers and stall owners are reluctant to adjust prices downwards accordingly.

As the prices of rice, sugar, wheat and vegetable oil are going down, one would expect that eating out would now be more affordable.

However, there are no signs of this being the case - in fact, the price of a cup of coffee or tea has recently been upped by 10 cents.

Perhaps it is time for the Consumers Association of Singapore to monitor the situation closely and ensure that food items are cheaper now that commodities are costing less.
