I REFER to the letter, 'Ban HDB residents from keeping dogs' (my paper, Oct 20).
More than 80 per cent of Singaporeans live in HDB flats, and a number are dog-owners.
What would the consequences be if HDB dwellers were banned from owning dogs?
Many dogs would be abandoned, adding to an already-increasing number of strays.
I am a dog-owner, and have seen people not picking up after their dogs.
I am ashamed of this minority of inconsiderate people.
That is why the Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority and animal- welfare associations are educating pet-owners and the public on responsible ownership.
Everyone should give each other time to learn and be more tolerant.
Suggesting a ban on dog-ownership is certainly not a solution.
Also, while we can't stop dogs from urinating in void decks, as it is their way of marking their territory, we can help flush the urine away with water.
We can't stop dogs from defecating, but we can pick up the waste and dispose of it.
My dog does bark at people, but only if it feels that the person looks suspicious or is a threat to me and my family.
I hope that people can be more understanding and tolerant. HDB grounds are communal areas, and the earth belongs to both humans and animals.
