I refer to the letter, "Six conditions for surrogacy" (my paper,Oct 22).
I strongly agree with the writer and feel that the six conditions mentioned are appropriate.
I am sad to say that while I'm only in my early 30s, I am not able to conceive due to medical reasons.
I initially considered adopting, but dropped the idea because my husband's and my families would have difficulty accepting the child as he/she would not biologically be ours.
Surrogacy is not allowed in Singapore, but one can go overseas for the procedure.
The logistical and legal aspects involved are very complicated and uncertain overseas.
If surrogacy were to be allowed in Singapore, I believe it will bring much joy to many infertile couples.
Of course, the fact that there will be risks involved cannot be overlooked.
However, I believe that with today's advances in medicine, the risks should be minimal.
Singapore is a small country, and all the hospitals here are strictly regulated.
Therefore, one can be sure that no one can easily abuse this system.
I understand that the issue of ethics also comes into play when surrogacy is being discussed.
However, it depends on the perspective taken.
Put yourself in the shoes of an infertile couple.
While only a small number of Singaporeans might be infertile, I hope to let others know that we exist.
As Singaporeans, we also hope to play a part in increasing the birth rate and making a difference.
