Hougang Ave 5 HDB block and surroundings not well-maintained
Wed, Nov 05, 2008
my paper

FOUR years ago, my retired parents and I decided to move to Hougang Avenue 5, as the flats in the area were larger and affordable at the time.

However, I have some issues with the state of hygiene and run-down condition of my block.

I brought this up on several occasions with the town council, but little was done.

My parents are aged, and their health is deteriorating daily.

We have never been approached about the possibility of lift upgrading.

There are cracks on the floor and in the void deck of my block. Also, the wiring in the block is not in good condition, and poses a serious hazard to residents.

The path linking Block 334 and its neighbouring blocks to Block 363, which is the only way out to Upper Serangoon Road for most residents, has not been well-maintained.

It is unevenly laid with poor-quality tiles, and rainwater gathers in puddles on it, making it a challenge to walk on in wet weather.

This path is used by many workers, students, housewives and the elderly to reach Hougang Central. I hope that the Government will be able to do something about this area. I am very concerned about the welfare of the many elderly
residents in the estate, and believe that only the Government can improve things here.

I am sure that many young, well-educated residents can also do something to raise the standard of living in Hougang Avenue 5.
