Strengthen safeguards against terrorism

My Paper

I refer to the report, "They kidnap your mind for life" (The Straits Times, Dec 8).

Detecting and destroying terror networks have become more challenging for law enforcers.

Singapore has faced terrorism before.

The city is now one of the world's busiest financial hubs and a bustling city with many tourist attractions - all of which could make Singapore a target for terrorist attacks.

Singapore is reputed for its well-structured security system and having a well-trained, efficient and capable Home Team.

But I believe it is important to always stay vigilant, and there are a few things that the country needs to take note of in its fight against terrorism: Singapore is an island, which makes it easier for any criminal or terrorist to escape from the country in 24 hours.

Thus, it needs to ensure security is tight at sea, land and air exit points, and ensure that coordination between teams at all points is good.

Security measures should be put in place at shopping areas and tourist attractions, such as Orchard Road and Suntec City, so that they will not be easily attacked by terrorists.

Taking into account the worst-case scenario, where a terrorist attack takes place in a busy area, Singaporeans can at least be sure that well-trained and experienced security personnel will be deployed to evacuate or rescue victims.

The authorities need to study and work out security measures and implement safeguards against the use of electronic equipment, toxic and corrosive chemicals or danger- our tools which can be used to make explosives.
