Unemployed are easy targets for radicals
Wed, Dec 31, 2008
my paper

I READ with concern the report, "Indonesian group getting 1,000 to fight in Gaza" (my paper, Dec 30).

Although the news is horrifying, meaningful lessons can be drawn from the story.

Religion has always been a sensitive issue, and it has been abused and quoted as the core cause behind the conflict in the Middle East.

Hence, radical religious organisations have a golden opportunity to brainwash naive religious followers into committing inhuman acts.

The news of the group's planned recruitment is a reflection of the depth of poverty in Indonesia.

Years of poverty can have a negative impact on a person's ability to reason and rationalise. In such a situation, the unemployed can easily be exploited, and fall prey to militants and religious extremists.

In the Singapore context, citizens should appreciate the Government's efforts to uphold freedom of religion, racial harmony and cohesiveness.

Furthermore, Singaporeans should treasure and safeguard the stability and security they enjoy.

They should also feel lucky that the Government is constantly working to provide a conducive environment wherein there are many opportunities for education and work.
