I CONSIDER myself fortunate to have realised my potential at 25.
Before that, I had a difficult time and sank into depression at times.
I was not doing well in school and, to make things worse, I was compared with my cousins, who were doing much better.
The pressure got so bad that I tried to run away from home once.
I felt helpless and seemed to have no one to turn to.
However, I was fortunate that my parents were able to accept me for who I am.
It was also fortunate that I was very active in sports in school.
With some support, I finally realised my potential.
Youths are sometimes stereotyped as being mischievous, rebellious or egoistic.
My work with young people has made me realise that they all need a little direction and motivation in order to do well.
I also find that my past experience has helped me relate to them better.
It has also led me to conclude that family support plays an important role in children's lives.
Do not give up on them if they do not do well in their studies.
Instead, try to discover their strengths and build on them.
Give them as much support as they need and they will be sure to succeed.
They might not meet expectations now, but give them time and they could well turn out to be late bloomers.
