Why such interest in S'pore politics?
Thu, May 21, 2009
my paper

I READ with interest reports on allegations that Swedes are funding or offering to fund Singapore political parties and non-governmental organisations (NGOs).

According to the article, 'NMP files police report over latest accusations' (my paper, May 19), netizens recently alleged that Nominated Member of Parliament Siew Kum Hong asked for or is receiving funding from a Swedish politician, who allegedly bankrolls the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP).

I am surprised that Swedish politicians are keen to be involved with Singapore's affairs. As a layman, I do not kno the complexities of the political games played by foreign countries, but I do know that they should never be allowed to pry into Singapore's affairs, much less fund its political parties or NGOs.

There is no such thing as a free lunch and I view these foreigners' interest - if the allegations are true - with strong suspicion.

If the SDP or other political organisations have been offered or have received foreign funds, as is alleged, they should come clean with it. The public has the right to know.

In the meantime, the authorities should look into these allegations as they affect the integrity of Singapore's political parties and NGOs.
