I REFER to the report, "S'pore re-envisioned" (my paper, May 28), which listed Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong's proposed changes to Singapore's electoral system.
There is no doubt that the ruling People's Action Party (PAP) will face more challenges during debates in Parliament as a result of these changes. However, this will create livelier and more fruitful discussions, to the benefit of the people.
With the increased number of Non-Constituency MPs, candidates from the opposition will have a chance to voice their concerns in Parliament, even if they were to lose in the next General Election but garner the most votes among the losers.
I also welcome the move to make Nominated MPs a permanent feature of Parliament.
The number of such Nominated MPs should be increased and opened to more civil-society groups, as well as to youth leaders above the age of 25.
In addition, I hope that the electoral boundaries could be redrawn and revealed to the public much sooner before a General Election, so as to provide a fairer playing field for both the ruling party and aspiring politicians from the opposition.
As a whole, I support the proposed changes.
Mr Muhammad Dzul Azhan Haji Sahban
