Different languages no threat to harmony
Thu, Aug 20, 2009
my paper

I REFER to the letter, "Bring race-based welfare groups under one roof" (my paper, Aug 19).

I disagree with the opinions expressed in the letter.

Singapore is a nation made up of people of different races.

Since I was in primary school, I have been taught to value my culture and respect those of other races as well. That is the way it should be.

Racial cohesion is not the same as forgetting your race or becoming "raceless". This is impossible, as race is part of a person's identity.

Recognising and respecting the differences between our races is what makes our country uniquely Singapore. Speaking one's own language is not wrong, nor is it a threat to racial harmony.

A true Singaporean should uphold his racial heritage while learning about and respecting those of other races. Social cohesion and friendship go beyond race.

It is about individuals' personalities, compatibility and social skills.
