Scrap fall-below bank fee for maids

By Mr Tan Keong Boon

EMPLOYERS are encouraged to give maids a day off per week and to help them acclimatise to Singapore.

However, more attention needs to be paid to maids' financial health.

POSB Bank requires account holders to have an average daily balance of at least $500 before they can be exempted from the fall-below fee.

As this fee is waived for seniors and minors, regardless of their account balances, the same should be applicable for maids.

Their monthly wages are lower than the minimum average daily balance of $500.

Most of them also remit at least part of their pay, and maintaining an average daily balance of $500 would be a great strain for them. More maids would be encouraged to open POSB accounts if they are not subject to the fall-below
fee.
