By Mr Muhammad Dzul Azhan Haji Sahban
IREFER to the letter, "HDB unit for social ties useful" (my paper, Nov 5).
As an HDB-flat dweller and a grassroots leader, I share the writer's views and suggestions.
The Community Relations Department, set up with the aim of strengthening social bonds among residents in the heartland, will be welcomed by HDB residents and grassroots organisations.
Social bonds and friendliness among residents of various races, religions and backgrounds - which were common in the good old kampung days - are not so common among current HDB flat residents.
HDB residents of all ages and backgrounds should be empowered to provide feedback and suggestions to the relevant authorities, including residents' committees, with regard to the improvement of daily living in their estates.
The newly set up Community Relations Department should also work closely with grassroots organisations to organise meaningful events and activities on occasions such as National Day, Racial Harmony Day and festivals.
I welcome the writer and other residents who share her views to join grassroots organisations in their respective constituencies as volunteers, and work alongside HDB officers from the community-relations department and other government agencies.
To take the first step is crucial, as actions speak louder than words.
